Spurs 1-2 Arsenal: Flamini? Both? Huh..?

Mathieu Flamini was the unlikely hero as Arsenal beat fierce rivals Tottenham in the Capital One Cup third round at White Hart Lane. The French midfielder marked his first appearance of the season with a superb second-half volley to secure bragging rights for Gunners’ fans. Spurs had mounted a spirited comeback after Flamini’s close-range strike following a fumble by stand-in goalkeeper Michel Vorm, and equalised at the start of the second half when Calum Chambers deflected the ball into his own net. However, it was Arsenal – beaten at Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday – who finished strongly, with Flamini crashing home a fine 25-yard effort after 78 minutes to send the travelling support into raptures. Both sides had made the expected changes, Dutchman Vorm replacing Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal while Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell was handed a rare start in the Gunners’ attack. Arsenal – who had not lost three matches in a row since April 2010 – fashioned the first decent opening in the 13th minute. Full-back Kieran Gibbs darted down the left and crossed towards Olivier Giroud in the six-yard box, with the ball bobbling up and then Campbell headed it over. The visitors remained on the offensive and took the lead after 26 minutes. Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, recalled to the starting XI, cut inside and rifled a low shot goalwards from the edge of the penalty area.

Mourinho: Costa was man of the match for sure

Jose Mourinho praised Diego Costa and threw a few criticisms Arsenal’s way after Chelsea’s 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Costa was somewhat the architect of Arsenal’s downfall in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime, playing a key role in the first-half sending off of defender Gabriel.
When asked on his thoughts of the fracas that ensued before, during and after Gabriel’s dismissal, Mourinho responded: “I don’t have a view on the sending off because I didn’t see the incident on television and the game is very, very fast. It looks for me that the referee and linesman had the same reactions.

http://kennicon.com/wp/miglioriscarpecalcetto.asp
The Chelsea boss added: “Man of the match for sure was Diego Costa. He brought everything to the game, he played the game like a game like this has to be played.”
Discussing his side’s victory, Mourinho fired an apparent shot at Chelsea’s London rivals.
http://circumplaudo.nl/asp/whitefootballboots.asp
http://agrico-trade.hr/includes/page/miglioriscarpecalcetto.asp
“I’ve played derbies in many countries and always say the same thing to my players: To win derbies you need emotional control.
If that barb was veiled, Mourinho then made sure the message to his opponents was clear.
“I played against Arsenal 12, 15, 18 times, I don’t know,” he began. “Only once he (Wenger) didn’t moan. On that day, we lost the game, we lost the cup, it was not good for us. We behaved in a fantastic way. No excuses, no crying, not moaning. Just Mr Jose Mourinho, my players and Chelsea Football Club.”

http://harstadmc.no/language/f50sale.asp
Costa was seen reacting angrily to the decision to substitute him late in the second half for Loic Remy, but Mourinho opted to play down the decision.
“[Loic] Remy played so well in the last game and deserves to play a little bit. Remy is fast; Diego is tired. The intention was to praise Remy and try to give something new for the last 10 or 15 minutes.”
The victory represents Chelsea’s first Premier League home win of the season and only their second overall, to which Mourinho appeared content.
“Good victory, important victory, deserved victory. What more can I say?
“We need to win matches. We won twice in three days, we kept two clean sheets. We controlled the matches. We deserved to win, we had some good individual performances and we had collectively the return of some principles of our play.

http://sapluuna.fi/html/nuevasbotasdefutbol.asp
“There was a better pace with and without the ball, a better reaction at the moment we lose the ball, good reaction to the moment when we recover the ball. We moved the ball quite well and we were comfortable in possession, even 11 against 11.”
Defender and goalscorer Kurt Zouma was credited as man of the match by most outlets after an accomplished performance, but Mourinho chose to take an opportunity not to praise the Frenchman, but to praise the man he dropped to accommodate him: John Terry.
“If I have to praise Zouma I prefer to praise John [Terry, England’s former lion],” the Portuguese said. “For Zouma to play is a great emotion, for John not to play is not the best emotion, but to behave the way he did as a captain in the dressing room, I prefer to praise a player like John.
“If I have to choose one player in this squad to be my right arm it is John. He is untouchable for me.

John Terry says Chelsea only Premier League club he will play for

Terry told The Guardian: "I am not taking anything for granted. "The manager has said if I can keep my form, I am in the side. But, if I don’t keep my form, he will have no qualms about taking me out and putting someone else in. "We have an honest relationship, I don’t doubt that he trusts me. Hopefully I can repay that, because he has been superb to me. I will give him everything. And he has been a father figure in my career so I owe him an awful lot. I realise one day that my career will come to an end so I want to give everything these next few years. "Every summer I work more or less every day to give myself the best chance. If it comes to that point where I am left out of the side, I know it’s not through any fault of not trying." The 34-year-old defender also said that, if he were no longer a first-choice player, he would follow the example of goalkeeper Petr Cech, who acted professionally after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois last season and has now joined Arsenal.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says retirement makes him panic

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted the thought of retirement makes him panic. The 65-year-old says he is more committed to the job than ever ahead of his 20th year in charge of the Gunners. Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after 27 years in charge of Manchester United, but Wenger has no plans of following the path of his old foe into a life away from the game.

Celtic recovered from a shock early goal from Stjarnan to stroll into a Champions League qualifying tie against Qarabag of Azerbaijan.

Olafur Karl Finsen's precise finish briefly gave the Icelandic part-timers hope of overturning a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Glasgow. But a Nir Bitton header and low Charlie Mulgrew drive either side of the interval put the tie beyond Stjarnan. Late goals from Leigh Griffiths and Stefan Johansen added the gloss. It means that the Scottish champions will face Qarabag, who defeated Rudar Pljevlja 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a near-post header from Reynaldo, in the penultimate qualifying round. There was no hint of danger for Celtic in the opening minutes as they stroked the ball majestically around an artificial surface sparkling in the Icelandic sunshine. With Ronny Deila reportedly concerned about the form of Emilio Izaguirre, the manager moved Mulgrew across to left-back to make room for the return of Virgil van Dijk. The presence of the highly rated Dutchman beside Belgium international Dedryck Boyata, the summer purchase from Manchester City, promised a back line capable of blanking out a side who rarely threatened in Glasgow and who have struggled in defence of their domestic title. However, Stjarnan's first-ever championship success was built on a counter-attacking game and they penetrated a lacklustre all-green line with their first attack.
